Self Defense

Everybody has the right to feel safe and to protect themselves from attackers.

However, the average person does not know the basics to protect themselves from attack.

American Academy Martial Arts / Judan Judo of Ohio offers a progressive self-defense program designed to build skills step by step. Our training begins with a 6-week Beginner Self-Defense Class, which is required before advancing to the next levels. This foundational course introduces essential techniques, safety strategies, and situational awareness to prepare students for real-world scenarios.

After completing the beginner course, students can move on to our Intermediate Self-Defense Course, where we focus on refining techniques, responding under pressure, and expanding on realistic scenarios. For those seeking to elevate their training further, our Advanced Self-Defense Course offers dynamic drills, complex threat responses, and leadership development.

Each level is carefully structured to build confidence, skill, and preparedness, starting with the beginner course as the essential first step.

Our 6-week beginners self-defense course is designed to equip participants with the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to stay safe in real-world situations. Taught by nationally recognized black belt instructors, this course blends traditional Japanese martial arts techniques with modern self-defense strategies that are practical, effective, and easy to learn—regardless of age or experience level.

Participants will learn how to:

      • Recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations
      • Set personal boundaries and use verbal de-escalation
      • Escape common grabs and holds
      • Apply simple and effective strikes, blocks, and joint releases
      • Defend against both standing and ground-based attacks
      • Respond under pressure with confidence and clarity

These courses are open to teens and adults, and perfect for individuals, families, or small groups. Whether you’re preparing for college, building confidence, or simply want to feel more secure in everyday life, this course is an empowering first step.

Self-defense is not just a one-time course—it’s a lifelong skill that grows stronger with practice. After completing our self-defense program, we invite you to continue your journey with us through ongoing martial arts training. Our regular classes in Japanese Jujitsu, and Olympic Judo provide the perfect environment to deepen your skills, build muscle memory, and develop the calm confidence needed to respond instinctively in any situation.

Whether you’re looking to stay sharp, challenge yourself, or become a mentor for others, our supportive community and expert instructors are here to guide you every step of the way. The journey doesn’t end—it evolves.
